The storage of flammable media, hazardous substances and chemicals is part of everyday laboratory routine across all industries. It is regulated by various laws, such as the Betriebssicherheitsverordnung (Industrial Safety Ordinance) or the Technische Regeln Gefahrstoffe (Technical Rules for Hazardous Substances). If it is a matter of storing originally packed or tightly sealed substances whose vapours do not normally escape into the atmosphere, this is referred to as passive storage.
The passive storage in safety cabinets is regulated in detail in the TRGS 510 regulation. In practice, however, active storage is often a reality, namely when substances are filled and transferred at the safety cabinet, when substances are worked with or when waste materials to be disposed of accumulate.
Accordingly, active storage includes the storage of flammable liquids in mobile containers which are used as stationary withdrawal and collection containers or opened for other purposes at the place of storage.
In addition to fire protection, more extensive safety measures are now required. In particular, the increased release of vapours and the resulting higher risk of explosive atmospheres require appropriate solutions.
With the TÜV type-tested DISPOSAL UTS ergo line of cabinets, DÜPERTHAL has created a special solution for the most diverse requirements and work processes. In the event of fire, the type-tested safety cabinets of the DISPOSAL UTS ergo line series, which are type-tested according to DIN EN 14470-1, provide 90 minutes of fire resistance. In addition, the model series has been awarded the High-Quality Seal of Approval by TÜV Süd for superior design, user-friendliness and increased durability. Both the test certificate and the associated explosion protection document are important for a comprehensive risk analysis.
This is because the Industrial Safety Regulation requires every employer to carry out a risk assessment for his work equipment. In addition to the industrial safety laws and the TRGS 526, a large number of additional regulations must be taken into account in the laboratory. Tested and certified facilities and products simplify the necessary documentation in a sustainable quality and environmental management.
To ensure safe filling and decanting, all models of the cabinet series for active storage in accordance with the current regulations TRGS 509 and TRGS 526 (laboratory guideline) have optimised ventilation and extended earthing. The effectiveness as well as the control of the exhaust air is an important component for the compliance with the explosion protection concept. For active storage, safety cabinets must be connected to a technical ventilation system and monitored.
Thus, the new safety cabinets have an efficient air flow with increased exhaust air volume flow, the triple effect of which guarantees safety. With the object extraction system, vapours and pollutants which may be produced during refilling at the collection container are safely absorbed directly at the point of origin. At the same time, the second stage of the safety package is the extraction of the entire cabinet interior.
In addition, all pedestals are equipped with a permanent floor extraction system with frontal exhaust air slots. When the exhaust air is connected, vapours and pollutants that collect on the floor are automatically and safely absorbed and fed into the exhaust air. In addition, the ventilation function is monitored with the standard integrated exhaust air monitoring unit. In case of pressure drop or ventilation failure, an acoustic fault signal is given.
To maintain explosion protection, the continuity of earthing or equipotential bonding is necessary for active storage. Therefore, all surface coatings of the safety cabinets inside and outside as well as the attachments and installations are designed to be electrically conductive in accordance with TRGS 727. The connection to the in-house earthing system is made via equipotential bonding lugs.

The intelligent Smart Control assistance system integrated as standard monitors the functionality of the exhaust air and the current fill level of the collection containers in the safety cabinet. The pulse generator for determining the fill level can optionally be a capacitive sensor or a float probe with one to three measuring points.
The information is shown on a touch display with error indication and logging function. The intelligent system warns in time of overfilling and gives a corresponding visual and acoustic alarm which can also be forwarded via potential-free contacts.
As an alternative to the Smart Control solution, DÜPERTHAL offers another forward-looking solution with the new Cabi2Net network to meet the increasing demands for performance and efficiency for which each individual user is now responsible. For the first time, safety cabinets can be linked together in the network and work processes can be controlled. Process safety is the central keyword here. After all, operators have long since ceased to be solely responsible for the safety of users and activities during the internal process chain; they must also document these and prepare them for further processing by digital devices. A basic requirement for this is reliable sensors for monitoring the required parameters.
